Contemporary Art, Body Image and Social Tabooo
Art is subjective, provocative and capable of challenging social norms. My project, Your Dick Pic in Oil, uses male genitalia as the subject of oil paintings to explore body image, sexualisation, unsolicited intimate images and respect in modern relationships.
As a freelance photographer and make-up artist with my own studio in Hamm, Germany, I regularly meet people who struggle with insecurities about their appearance. Many share experiences of receiving unsolicited explicit images, particularly through online dating and within the gay community. The anonymity of the internet can make it easier to cross personal boundaries and reduce human connection to physical appearance.
The project questions how self-worth and identity become linked to the size, shape and appearance of male genitalia. It also addresses the wider social issues surrounding sexual objectification, inappropriate behaviour, body image insecurity and the pressure to meet unrealistic physical expectations.
To explore these themes visually, I invited 15 men to participate as models, translating intimate and often stigmatised subjects into provocative works of contemporary art. Through expressive oil painting, Your Dick Pic in Oil brings topics commonly relegated to the margins of public discussion into a broader cultural conversation.
